Arthur Alexander was born on May 10, 1940 in Sheffield, Alabama. In 1960 he began his musical career by recording his first single, Sally Sue Brown, under the name June Alexander for Judd Records. In 1961 he recorded You Better Move On at FAME Studios in Florence, Alabama, a hit that would later be covered by major artists. Soon after, his song Anna (Go to Him) became a U.S. R&B Top Ten hit and was performed by acts including the Beatles.
