Formed in 2003 in Cairo, Egypt, Cairokee is a rock band known for their
politically-charged lyrics. Friends since their school days, the band is
comprised of lead vocalist Amier Eid, lead guitarist Sherif Hwary, drummer Tamer
Hashem, keyboardist Sherif Mostafa, and bassist Adam el-Alfy. Originally, they
were known as Black Star and played covers of English-language songs. They only
performed one song – “Ghariba” – in Egyptian, but because of the audience’s
reaction to it, they switched to playing songs sung in their native language.
