Singer, musician, and former American Idol contestant Danny Gokey was born April 24, 1980, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His interest in music began when he would sing in church with his family. He eventually became the church’s worship and music director. Rather than pursue a musical career in the Christian market, he decided to pursue a mainstream music career. Encouraged by his wife, he decided to audition for American Idol. Four weeks before that audition, his wife Sophia died during surgery to treat her congenital heart disease.
