Following the path of Grandmaster Flash, Funkmaster Flex was a DJ who came to dominate the New York rap scene in the 1990s. Born Aston Taylor, the son of a Jamaican DJ, he started in radio as an assistant to Chuck Chillout on Kiss FM. He eventually hosted his own show on the Hot 97 station and became one of New York's top hip-hop club DJs at The Tunnel. Funkmaster Flex released his major label debut album, 'The Mix Tape, Vol 1: 60 Minutes of Funk', in 1995.
