Formed in Norfolk, Virginia, the Golden Gate Quartet inaugurated gospel pop in
the 1940s, helping to bring the genre out of the churches. Popular in Europe,
the Golden Gate Quartet settled in France in 1959. Their version of "Oh Happy
Day" remains a cross-generational hit, appreciated by audiences far beyond the
