After leaving school Maureen McGovern became a secretary, performing vocals
part-time with local band Sweet Rain. A demo tape recorded by McGovern found its
way on to the desk of Russ Regan, boss of 20th Century Records and this gave the
singer from Ohio her lucky break. Regan was looking for a singer for the Al
Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn song The Morning After, recently awarded an Academy
Award for Best Original Song after being featured in the 1972 film The Poseidon
