Christian Fougeron (guitar, vocals) and Pierre Schott (bass, guitar,
programming, vocals) formed The Drinks in Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin) in 1983. Renamed
Raft in 1985, the duo released the unsuccessful English-language album It's
Growing Light . Raft then changed tack and launched into burlesque French pop
with new wave and reggae influences. The change was radical and the success
immediate, with "Yaka Dansé " reaching number two in the Top 50 in 1987. Raft
then enjoyed an intense period of fame with "Femmes du Congo", which was also a
