In the world of British rock, Turin duo Brakes seem elusive. They blend the
acoustic folk of their debut album The Optimist LP (2001) with the dark,
electric Ether Song (2003) (featuring the hit "Painkiller") and a more direct
sound on Dark on Fire (2007), produced by Ethan Johns. Turning from a duo to a
quartet with 2005's Jackinabox , the band signed with Cooking Vinyl five years
later for the release of Outbursts, which was less successful than its
predecessors. Turin Brakes nevertheless retained a loyal following of fans of
their vocal harmonies, and continued with We Were He...
